Profile

Lawrence Bruce-Robertson studied philosophy at the University of Toronto for his B.A. degree. He then became a medical doctor (M.D. from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, with post-graduate training at Mt Sinai hospital in New York city). He returned to the humanities to study Classics, obtaining an M.A. at the Classics department of Dalhousie University. He was a fellow of King's College, Halifax, and spent three years teaching in the core text Foundation Year Programme at King's. Following this he studied philosophy at Cornell University, earning an M.A. and a Ph.D. His scholarly work is focused on the history of philosophy, especially the work of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, and Hegel. He has written on Aristotle, the Canadian philosopher James Doull, Plato and Hegel. Dr. Bruce-Robertson and his wife Jane have three children and in their free time can be found backcountry and alpine skiing, rock and ice climbing, and in general doing anything which takes them into Newfoundland's beautiful outdoors.​
