Peter Stewart, B.A. (Memorial), Ph.D. (McMaster)
Chair of the Psychology Program
I teach courses in Introductory Psychology, Human Memory and Cognition, Physiological Psychology, Sensation and Perception, and Research Methods and Design. I also really enjoy teaching the senior seminar class and supervising the senior independent projects. I also typically torture….I mean supervise 2 or 3 honours students a year.
I did my graduate work (McMaster University, Hamilton, ON) in the field of cognitive neuroscience where I examined several neural correlates of performance monitoring (i.e., I looked at what happens in the brain when we make mistakes). Since coming to Grenfell Campus my research interests have become more eclectic and the projects that my students and I have undertaken in recent years reflect that. These research projects include investigations into taste perception, aviation psychology, the influence of media usage on cognition, retrieval induced forgetting, and psychological flow during video game play just to name a few.
I have recently established an electroencephalography (EEG) laboratory on campus and my research program in the upcoming years will utilize this technology (when necessary) to examine various constructs in the cognitive and social sciences. The lab will be examining a number of areas including performance monitoring, person perception, and multimodal perception. Furthermore, I hope to be doing research with different populations including: lowly undergraduate students, the elderly, children, and synesthetes (if you don’t know what it is check out what Wikipedia has to say: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia.
Broad areas of research interest for me include: human cognition, perception, multisensory perception, social cognition, cognitive neuroscience, and teaching pedagogy.
