Major in Computational Mathematics

This degree is a new Bachelor of Science major offered only at Grenfell Campus. The Mathematics Major covers the essential undergraduate topics in mathematics, develops rigorous logical thinking, and equips students with computational techniques to model and solve real-world problems.

Students must complete the required courses as outlined under Grenfell Campus Core Program Requirements, Breadth of Knowledge Requirement, Literacy Requirement, and Quantitative Reasoning and Analysis Requirement.

The course requirements for a major in Computational Mathematics are:

  1. Mathematics 1000, 1001, 2000, 2050, 2051, 2130, 2320, 3000, 3132, 3240, 4242, and 4950,
  2. Three credit hours in a computer programming course,
  3. Three credit hours in a statistics course,
  4. Three credit hours in a physics course,
  5. Philosophy 2210, and
  6. Twelve credit hours in mathematics at the 3000 level or higher, at least three credit hours of which must be at the 4000 level.

Minor in Mathematics

Students may take a minor in Mathematics at Grenfell Campus. Below are the requirements for a minor in Mathematics:

  1. Mathematics 1000, 1001 (The only other course at the 1000 level which carries credit toward a Minor in Mathematics is Computer Science 1700.)
  2. 18 additional credit hours in Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics courses beyond the 1000 level OR 15 additional credit hours in Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics courses beyond the 1000 level and 3 credit hours in Statistics or Computer Science courses.
  3. At least 6 credit hours will be in courses at the 3000 level or higher.

Note: that Engineering 1020 is a computer programming course and currently taught at Grenfell Campus instead of Computer Science 1700.
