Faculty & Staff - Maggie Atkinson

Maggie Atkinson teaches art history in the Department of Visual Arts at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, Newfoundland. After earning her BA in history of art with a minor in fine art she continued her education in art history and visual culture at Queen's University (Kingston) where she completed her MA and PhD. She teaches art history and feminist theory, focusing on modern and contemporary visual culture. She specializes in conceptions of aestheticism and modernity in nineteenth- and twentieth-century British and North American visual and material culture and her interests include Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts and Aestheticism; spirituality as it intersects with visual and material culture; multi-faceted identities; liminal/interstitial/transitional spaces; trans-temporal mapping; diasporas, cultural hybrids and popular culture and advertising. Her current research, addressed in her book-length study entitled The Fringes of Immortality: A Goodly Company and Artistic Collaborations in Visionary Art 1880-1930, focuses on representations of spirituality, occultism and fantasy in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century.
