Four Specific Grenfell Entrance Scholarships

In addition to the entrance scholarships awarded automatically to all qualifying students entering Memorial University, Grenfell Campus offers four additional entrance scholarships.

RUFUS GUINCHARD ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship has been established by the Newfoundland government in honour of the late Rufus Guinchard.

The award, valued at $2,000.00, is presented annually to a student entering Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland who has demonstrated a commitment to the preservation of Newfoundland heritage and culture. Their commitment may be reflected in Newfoundland music, folklore, art, or writing.

Applicants for the Rufus Guinchard Scholarship should submit, with their application, either a statement of their interests relevant to this scholarship, or a completed piece of work (for further explanation, see note * below).

*NOTE: In addition to the above, students will want to demonstrate their commitment be submitting a number of samples of their work. For example, several original poems, writings or pieces of art may be submitted. A tape of selections of their own original music may be forwarded for consideration if desired. A letter of reference from someone who can assess their commitment through any of these media is also welcome.

  1. Your academic record as per the attached form (must be signed by your Guidance Counselor). *Only one is required if applying for more than one scholarship.
  2. Samples of work.
  3. Letter of reference from someone who can assess your ability on the above criteria.

THE WILLIAM AND NAOMI LUNDRIGAN SCHOLARSHIPS

The William and Naomi Lundrigan Scholarship is awarded to entrance students attending Memorial University's Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook. Two scholarships valued at a portion of the income on the endowment will be awarded annually. The recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University and consideration may be given to financial need.

Information Required:

  1. Your academic record as per the attached form (must be signed by your Guidance Counselor). *Only one is required if applying for more than one scholarship.
  2. Have you applied or will you be applying for a student loan? Yes No
    Financial need may be considered in awarding this. The University usually determines a student has met the "need" criteria if he/she applies for and receives a Canada Student Loan.

THE CITY OF CORNER BROOK J. R. SMALLWOOD SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1991 by the City of Corner Brook to honour the Honourable Joseph R. Smallwood, first Premier of Newfoundland, who contributed significantly to the educational and cultural development of Newfoundlanders. This fund, donated by the City is a tangible mark of the support given by the City to Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland since the campus opened in Corner Brook.

The scholarship, valued at $1,000.00, will be awarded to a student who is a resident of the city of Corner Brook in the final year of high school who is proceeding to Grenfell Campus. The award will be made, upon application, to a student of outstanding academic merit and promise who has demonstrated active participation in school and community life.

Information required:

  1. Your academic record as per the attached form (must be signed by your Guidance Counselor). *Only one is requried if applying for more than one scholarship.
  2. Letter of reference from an indivisual who can speak to "outstanding academic merit and promise", as noted in the description.
  3. A copy of your resume demonstrating your active participation in school and community life.

THE SISTERS OF MERCY ANNIVERSARY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by the Sisters of Mercy to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the sisters on the West Coast of Newfoundland in 1893. The Sisters of Mercy, educators in Newfoundland since 1842, have been associated with Memorial University since the university was established.

Information required:

  1. Your academic record as per the attached form (must be signed by your Guidance Counselor). *Only one is requried if applying for more than one scholarship.
  2. Letter of reference from someone who can assess your "academic standing and promise" and "financial circumstances".
  3. Have you or will you be applying for a student Loan? Yes No
    Financial need may be considered in awarding this. The University usually determines a student has met the "need" criteria if he/she applies for and receives a Canada Student Loan.
