The men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team spent their first weekend of 2015 in Halifax, NS competing against the University of King's College teams.

Although each team came away without a win, the teams were able to gain valuable experience to help their programs grow and take the step towards competing in university sport.

The Grenfell Campus athletics season has been one of travel and sport development.

Men’s basketball and women’s volleyball both have more than 15 games under their belt and the women’s basketball had 10 games in the first half. This includes local competition and travel throughout the Atlantic provinces including trips to universities in Saint John, Truro, Sydney, Prince Edward Island and Halifax for ACAA tournaments, exhibition and club competition.

“We have the backing from the university to seek out more competitive games for our teams as we continue to grow athletics here at Grenfell Campus,” said Kirk Durning, co-ordinator of athletics. “This has lead us to more games against other universities and club teams of that caliber, which means travelling to play when they can fit us into their schedule. This includes league tip-off tournaments, Invitational events and weekend exhibitions.”

The travel is providing the teams and athletes the opportunity to compete against other university teams and experience true university sport, Mr. Durning said.

“Committing to traveling to compete against other universities is helping us build our reputation in competitive sport and it also allows our athletes to see first-hand the commitment necessary to play at that level.”

Mr. Durning’s efforts are also focused on bringing more competition to Grenfell’s newly- renovated gymnasium. The basketball teams will continue to have Grenfell Gameday on Thursdays and the women’s volleyball team will be hosting a few local club teams for a series over the next month.
