Indigenization

Strategic Plan

Year 1

  • The Grand Council Flag, which signifies alliances between people in Mi'kmaq territory, was presented to Grenfell Campus to fly permanently on campus.
  • In-Business mentorship program, that will pair Indigenous youth and business mentors, was announced.
  • Faculty members are working in collaboration with Indigenous communities, including a part-time research community liaison to facilitate better research relationships in the Bay St. George Indigenous group.
  • The Indigenous Resource Centre was completed, and flags representing the Indigenous groups of our students fly in the main public space on campus.
  • Grenfell Campus is part of a university-wide Strategic Framework for Indigenization carrying us through to 2026, that presents a set of actions grounded in the consultations and framed so Memorial can advance reconciliation.
  • A committee, comprised of members of Grenfell Campus and members of the Qalipu First Nation members, was reinvigorated to strengthen that partnership.

Year 2

  • The Grand Council Mi'kmaq Flag is flying permanently, and signed accompanying memorandum of understanding with Qalipu First Nation that aligns priorities identified in Memorial's Strategic Framework for Indigenization.
  • Indigenous cluster hires at Memorial resulted in two positions at Grenfell: Erica Samms- Hurley, Faculty of Nursing, and Dr. Amy Hudson will be cross appointed with the School of Science and the Environment and the School of Arctic and Sub-Artic Studies.
  • The number of rotating courses with a primary focus on Indigenous content has increased to 15.
  • Grenfell Art Gallery has collaborated on projects with Indigenous focus: Deep History with Infinite Possibility: Coast Salish Art in Conversation with Mi'kmaq exhibition. As a second project, the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom, released a digital commission by Mi'kmaq artist and alumni Jordan Bennett, co-curated by Matthew Hills, Grenfell Campus Art Gallery.
