As companies aim to become more competitive/world-class by applying Lean Principles, they are
realizing that they need to develop internal lean champions who can support and lead various
initiatives and continuous improvement teams. The Lean Manufacturing Certificate Program Level is
intended to develop strong supporters of lean.

The Lean Manufacturing Certificate Program is a Six Day Program (6 modules) designed to meet the
training needs of companies adopting the ‘lean approach’ to doing business. It provides theory and
application of the key lean tools. It is also intended to allow them to better support the lean approach
of their companies who are serious about improving profitability through reducing waste. Graduates
receive a certificate, granted by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, Newfoundland & Labrador

Upon successful completion of this interactive program, participants will be familiar with the principles
and key tools supporting the company lean initiative. They should be strong contributors to the lean
journey able to provide leadership on improvement teams and drive improvements in their areas of

The program consists of six modules:
Introduction to Lean 
Value Stream Mapping 
CITT/5S/Visual Factory 
Problem Solving 
Standardized Work 
Lean Implementation/Graduation 

Participants should have a strong interest in Lean thinking and the commitment of their organization to
the lean journey. There are practicum assignments where participants have an opportunity to apply
lean thinking tools to their workplace. The assignments are evaluated by the instructor and then
returned to participants. Each participant must attend all courses to receive a certificate.

Facilitator: David Haire, CME’s VP of Best Practices and Lean Management, Atlantic Region

David Haire, Vice President of Best Practices and Lean Management, Atlantic Region for the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, is responsible for assisting companies along the Lean journey by providing training workshops, consulting and leadership skills along with strategic planning advice for those pursuing Lean Manufacturing and Best Practices.  A graduate of Industrial Engineering Technology from Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland he also holds a Quality Assurance Technology Certificate from Conestoga College, a Principles and Practices of Lean Manufacturing Certificate from the University of Kentucky and has completed a number of Lean Manufacturing courses offered through both Dana and the CME.  David has sat as the chair of Fluent Manufacturing Consortia in Newfoundland, whose purpose is to work collectively and individually in pursuit of lean – to improve productivity, profitability, morale, and simplicity.  Using Lean Manufacturing principles and practices, David has led a series of continuous improvement activities aimed at waste elimination and the pursuit of perfection.  David also has experience planning, implementing, maintaining and auditing quality systems including ISO 9000 and QS 9000.
