Profile
Originally from Yellowknife, NT, Ally Groenen got her Bachelors of Horticultural Science from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley, BC where she developed an interest in environmental responsibility. After researching bio-remediation for a paper in her undergrad, Ally developed an interest in soil remediation and environmentally responsible resource extraction. Ally is a graduate student in the Boreal Ecosystems and Agricultural Science program at the Grenfell campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, where she works with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper to find a secondary use for their organic waste. Specifically, she is composting the sludge from their water treatment facility with fungi and earthworms to produce a soil amendment that could be used in agriculture or other industries. She is also conducting a soil remediation experiment to determine the ability of the composted sludge to break down petroleum hydrocarbons in.
