Fall 2020 Programs

English as a Second Language

Memorial University of Newfoundland's Grenfell Campus has two programs of intensive ESL study: Intensive English Program at Grenfell (IEP-G) and Intensive English Bridge Program at Grenfell (IEBP-G) Level 1 and Level 2. Both are full-time, non-credit, academic English programs which cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills and include workshops on Canadian and Newfoundland culture.

 

IEP-G

The Intensive English Program at Grenfell (IEP-G) is designed to improve students' English language skills for academic, professional and personal purposes. This program is open to all applicants who are over 18, hold a valid high school diploma and have an intermediate level of English.

INTERMEDIATE (IELTS 4.5 or better/TOEFL 40 or better/CAEL 40 or better)

-25 hours per week English language instruction

 

IEBP-G

The Intensive English Bridge Program at Grenfell (IEBP-G) is designed to prepare students for the language demands of university courses and university life at the undergraduate level. It is intended for applicants to Memorial University who have been provisionally accepted as undergraduate students. IEBP-G students take one or two academic credit courses concurrent with their ESL studies.

 

Level 1: HIGH-INTERMEDIATE (IELTS 5.5/TOEFL 58-69/CAEL 40)

-20 hours per week English language instruction

-one undergraduate course (3 credits) selected by the ESL Coordinator

 

Level 2: ADVANCED (IELTS 6.0/TOEFL 70-78/CAEL 50)

-15 hours per week English language instruction

-one undergraduate course (3 credits) selected by the ESL Coordinator

-one additional undergraduate course (3 credits) selected from a limited list.

 

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Grenfell campus offers the CAEL exam at the end of the Fall and Winter semesters. Students wishing to progress from ESL to undergraduate studies must achieve a minimum score on the CAEL or similar exam. Some examples are below.

 

PROFICIENT/ADMISSABLE:

  • TOEFL 79 or better overall (with at least 20 in Reading and Writing and no less than 17 in Listening and Speaking)
  • IELTS 6.5 or better overall (with at least band 6 in Reading and Writing)
  • CAEL 60 or better overall (with at least two bands at 60 or better in Reading, Writing, Listening, or Speaking and no band below 50)

Program structure

  • courses begin in September and January
  • each term is 13 weeks + the exam period
  • 15-25 hours per week of academic English instruction (varies by level)
  • learn to understand academic readings and lectures, take lecture and reading notes, write academic papers, express opinions clearly in English and communicate on campus
  • participate in an integrated skills course, grammar and vocabulary classes, language labs, tutorials, small group discussions, as well as culture and society sessions

 

Personalized instruction

  • Benefit from personalized instruction on a small campus with class sizes of 18 or fewer students

 

Full integration into the university

  • access to Grenfell's facilities including housing, library, sports facilities, computer labs and network
  • participation in credit course with student-led discussion and study groups (IEBP-G Level 1 and Level 2 only)

 

Safe, friendly campus and community

  • a safe environment where you are surrounded by friendly English speakers on campus, in housing and in the community
  • many opportunities to make friends and practice English in natural situations

 

International student support and activities

  • regular social events, activities and excursions for international students
  • airport pickup, welcome program, international student orientation and many other support services and programs
