Environmental Analytical Chemistry laboratory

Chemistry lab equipped with the very latest instrumentation for use in gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, high-performance

liquid chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry, atomic absorption, diode array ultraviolet/visible

spectrophotometry, as well as equipment for classical wet bench techniques.

The Campus Herbarium

The Campus Herbarium houses a reference collection of plants useful for teaching and research purposes both for students and

faculty. It is also gaining national recognition as a repository for Western Newfoundland species.

Environmental Biology laboratory

A newly completed Environmental Biology lab provides an excellent facility for the study of aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems.

The lab is fully equipped with a variety of instruments used in both laboratory study and field study of environmental systems.

Chemistry laboratory (AS3012)

This state-of-the-art teaching laboratory, complete with fume hoods, will focus on organic chemistry, which is the study of

carbon-based molecular and inorganic chemistry, including the study of metallic compounds. This lab will be used by students in the

environmental science and general science programs.

Research laboratory 1 (AS3026)

This space will be used by students and faculty and will include wet and dry benches. Researchers will carry out scientific work in the

fields of biology, chemistry and earth science.

Research laboratory 2 (AS3029)

This second research lab will provide wet and dry benches for student and faculty research in the areas of environmental science.

Earth science/ soils laboratory (AS3030/3017)

The earth science/soils lab is a teaching lab for courses in the study of soils and for future courses in geology beyond the

first-year university level. This lab will also include preparation and storage space.

Biology laboratory (biology support) (AS3032)

Accommodating up to 24 students studying biology and microbiology, the biology lab will support the nursing and environmental

science programs. The support areas will be used for the cultivation of tissue culture and microbiological preparation.

Physics laboratory (physics support) (AS3033)

With the introduction of the new physics degree program, more space is required for student learning and research. This lab will

accommodate third- and fourth-year students studying electricity and subatomic physics.

Telescope observatory dome and control room (AS4055)

The telescope will be used primarily as a research and teaching resource for physics and astronomy faculty, staff and students;

however, community outreach programs will also be an important part of its mandate. Public tours and observing nights will be

scheduled, as well as remote-observing programs for provincial schools, and astronomy and physics-themed events for high

school students.

Gros Morne National Park Field Station

Access to a university field station in Gros Morne National Park and co-operative interaction with provincial and federal parks,

environment and forestry departments provides a solid practical background for interpretation of biotic and abiotic features of the

boreal forest biome.

Bay of Islands Estuary

Grenfell's location on the Bay of Islands estuary provides the opportunity for those interested in marine studies to investigate a wide

variety of near shore marine environments, while an abundance of nearby ponds and lakes invite those who are interested in

freshwater studies.
