Grenfell Mentors

International Student Services

​At Grenfell Campus we encourage cross cultural engagement with all our students, both national and international. We also understand that moving to a new place can sometimes be very challenging and in an effort to help bridge the gap between both groups of students we offer a mentor program to new international students where they are paired with one of our Canadian student mentors.

What is Grenfell Mentors?

  • Grenfell Mentors is a volunteer program which promotes intercultural communication, understanding and friendship between Canadian and international students.
  • Grenfell Mentors seeks to foster community integration by pairing students from varying backgrounds who may share similar interests.  


Who can be a mentor in the program?

Mentors in the program are Canadian students who are beyond their 1st year of studies at Grenfell Campus, are in clear academic standing and have an interest in working and learning with students from other cultures. Mentors who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate letter of completion and an honorarium of $150.00.
 
To apply to be a mentor in the program, fill out the application here and send it to international@grenfell.mun.ca or drop off your completed form to AS 270 or RES 221.

Deadline for the Fall is September 9th and for the Winter Semesters is January 9th.

Who Can be a mentee in the program?

Mentees in the program are international students who are arriving and studying at Grenfell Campus for the very first time. To apply to be a mentee in the program, fill out the application here​ and send it to international@grenfell.mun.ca or drop off your completed form to AS 270 or RES 221.

Deadline for the Fall Semesters is September 9th and for the Winter Semesters is January 9th.

What are the benefits of being a Mentor or a Mentee?

The benefits of being a mentor or a mentee are similar. You will:

  • Gain valuable cross-cultural experience
  • Learn about another culture and discover more about your own
  • Share in traditional cultural activities
  • Make new friends
  • Learn to respect individuality and diversity
  • Learn new words and expressions in another language
  • Have the opportunity to attend a variety of fun multicultural events!
  • ​Gain valuable volunteer experiences

Requirements to successfully complete the Grenfell Mentors Program:

Both Mentors and Mentees must:
  • Complete a group Cross-Cultural Training
  • Participate in 1 monthly team building program organized by the coordinators
  • Engage your partner in at least 1 interaction/activity bi-weekly
  • Participate in at least 1 volunteer activity together on-campus
  • Participate in an online discussion group to reflect on activities/events and any other opportunity shared with your partner​
